The M/C Income Protection Plan (IPP) is for eligible M/C employees and Rent Regulation Services Unit Employees of the State of New York represented by DC-37. The IPP provides income protection if you can’t work due to illness or injury. It works alongside other benefits like retirement and Social Security to help ease financial burdens.
The IPP is administered by the Department of Civil Service and benefits are provided by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
Overview
The IPP is made up of two parts: Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability.
Short Term Disability (STD) benefit
- Payable for up to 24 weeks from the onset of a disability (starting after a 14-day waiting period).
- Payable weekly at 50% of your covered weekly salary, not to exceed $961.54 per week and not beyond six months from the onset of disability.
Long Term Disability (LTD) benefit
- Payable after six months of disability, once STD ends, or after you use all sick leave and any other leave credits you choose, whichever happens later.
- Payable at 60% of your covered monthly salary, not to exceed $5,000 per month, for the duration of disability, but not beyond the earlier of age 65 or death.
Contact your HR for information regarding disabilities that begin at or after age 60.
You must exhaust your accrued sick leave before you are eligible to file for disability benefits under IPP.
If you need assistance regarding general plan information, enrollment, filing claims or other administrative matters, contact your HR.
Cost
IPP is funded entirely by New York State, so there is no cost to you for this coverage.
Eligibility for Other Disability Benefits
Participation in the IPP does not affect your eligibility for Social Security, workers’ compensation or retirement benefits. However, benefits received or expected from these sources are used to reduce IPP benefits. If you are eligible for Social Security benefits but do not apply, your LTD benefits will be reduced by an estimated Social Security award.
Benefits received from your private disability policy are not used to offset STD or LTD benefits.
