When You Retire

Your employer is responsible for determining and certifying your eligibility to continue coverage as a retiree. If you have any questions, speak with the HBA from the participating agency you retired from.

Changing Your Enrollment

In some situations, you can change your NYSHIP enrollment. Below are some common situations. Speak with your HBA to learn more.

Enrolling a Dependent

A dependent can be a spouse, domestic partner, or child. If your dependent is eligible for NYSHIP but not yet enrolled, you have options. To learn more about the specific requirements for enrolling:

Returning To Work

If you are considering returning to work after you retired, you may have some additional considerations for your NYSHIP coverage. Speak with your HBA to learn more about how your coverage may change.

Reinstating Coverage

If you deferred or cancel your NYSHIP retiree coverage, you can reinstate your coverage at any time. To reinstate your coverage, submit a signed, written request to EBD.
